Still rebuilding monthly reports in Excel? This field guide shows GP teams how reporting and daily entry work in Business Central, with side-by-side task comparisons and the reports you get on day one.

Key takeaways

  • Dimensions replace segmented account strings. Tag transactions by department, region, customer or item, and report on any of them without a sprawling chart of accounts.
  • Power BI reports arrive prebuilt. Core financials come ready to run, plus industry reports for distribution, manufacturing, professional services and nonprofits.
  • Every figure traces to its transaction. Drill-down is native, so you validate numbers in the system instead of re-checking them in spreadsheets.
  • Most GP habits carry over. Receivables, payables, journal entries and trial balances follow familiar flows, with posting previews before you commit.
  • Built-in AI features. Copilot and agents can assist with invoice matching, bank reconciliation and cash flow forecasting, and each one hands its work back for your approval.

What former GP teams experience

Sprenger Healthcare ran roughly 80 legal entities on GP, where a single account had to be created once per entity. After moving to Business Central with Alta Vista, Sprenger cut its chart of accounts by up to 75% and automated intercompany transactions that used to take two hours each month.

“Now I spend my time on the bigger-picture items instead of running reports and pulling data,” says CFO Brandon Malanowski.

Why finance leaders move early

Microsoft ends GP mainstream support on December 31, 2029. That date is also when the tax and regulatory updates stop. The teams moving now are planning around the date while experienced migration consultants are still available.

Mai Pham, head of finance at VDX.tv, set an early target for her team’s move. Her reasoning was that if they waited until the final years, every GP customer would be migrating at once and implementation resources would be harder to get. “We just don’t want to be further behind,” she says.
